Enriching the Curriculum

Posted: 12th September 2024

One week into the 2024 Autumn Term and Beachborough Prep pupils get stuck back into their learning and enrichment activities!

On Tuesday, Form VIII pupils had the opportunity to enhance their understanding of river systems by visiting the Field Studies Council (FSC) in Amersham to conduct a detailed investigation of the River Chess as part of their Geography lessons. The day was filled with hands-on learning, as students explored how the river changes along its course.

The main focus of the trip was to study the river’s physical characteristics, such as its width, depth, and velocity. Armed with fieldwork tools and a keen sense of curiosity, pupils measured and compared these variables at different sections of the river to observe how they changed over distance. This practical approach allowed them to deepen their understanding of geographical processes, gaining first-hand experience in data collection and analysis.

In addition to developing their technical fieldwork skills, the students displayed impressive teamwork and collaboration. Working in small groups, they ensured that each task was carried out efficiently, fostering a spirit of co-operation and problem-solving throughout the day.

Form VIII pupil Ben said of the trip;

“Seeing the river first hand is really helpful in our geography lessons as you get to see and understand what is actually happening and feel the power and force of the river. It was such a great experience, we recorded everything we saw and felt.”

Trips like these and taking the classroom outdoors are vital in bridging classroom learning with real-world experience. By stepping outside the traditional classroom setting and immersing themselves in the natural environment, pupils not only gained a better grasp of the river’s dynamics but also developed valuable life skills such as communication, leadership, and critical thinking.

Back in the classroom, the children used their new Lenovo two-in-one laptops which are now given to each Form VII and Form VIII pupil as part of our digital strategy, to make a start on their Field Work Enquiry Project.

Ben said, “I am using the Canva application to present my findings during the trip. We work on the project throughout the whole year, and I hope to have something really impressive to present at the end of the year by using the laptops and various applications.”

Form VIII returned with both a greater appreciation for the natural world and strengthened fieldwork skills, ready to apply what they learned to their fieldwork enquiry project.

At Beachborough Prep we enrich the children’s learning with a plethora of curriculum focussed trips throughout the school year.
