The title of Head Girl and Head Boy has always stirred up a huge amount interest at Beachborough Prep among the Form VII pupils, and the possibility of becoming the Head Girl or Boy as they transition into their final year of school in Form VIII is thought of as a huge privilege, voted for by teachers and looked up to by their peers across the whole school.
This academic year, and one month into their roles, Beth and Ben our Form VIII Head Girl and Head Boy, tell us what it is like and why they so wanted to become ambassadors for the school.
Q. What made you apply for the role of Head Beachburian?
Beth. I’ve been at Beachborough a good few years now and I’ve always looked up to the Head pupils. I have very much loved the idea of doing the same one day and that maybe a younger pupil would look at me as a good role model and think that they might want to aspire to be the next Head Beachburian in a few years’ time. Becoming the head of school is a goal that embodies leadership, responsibility and the opportunity to make a positive impact within the Beachborough community, and I would love to be a part of that.
Ben. I wanted the role because when I was watching the past Head Beachburians thrive and show the school what great role models they were, it made me think, I want to be in their shoes, I want to show this wonderful school what a great role model I can be.
Q. What is the role of Head Beachburian and how do you feel you will represent the school?
Beth. The role of head girl is a role of great responsibility and honour, showing a growth mindset, empathy and dedication. I believe I can best represent this at Beachborough by embodying these qualities through communication, active listening, and commitment to my role.
Ben. To even be nominated for the role as deputy Head Beachburian, would have been an honour. However, for me to get the role of Head Beachburian is a special honour and a privilege. This in itself shows how hard and sought after this role is and I am extremely grateful to have been able to get this role.
Q. What do you think you can specifically bring to the role of Head Beachburian?
Beth. I hope that as this year’s head Beachburian, I can bring lots of leadership and optimistic, positive traits. I will strive for a supportive and inclusive environment and make sure everybody’s voice is heard and valued.
Ben. I hope that as Head Beachburian I will be able add a sense of togetherness throughout the school. I would also like to start a new School Council system, and I believe that as pupils we know what some people may like or what might work the best within the school.
Q. Are there any changes you’d like to make or is there anything you would like to implement at Beachborough, in your final year of school?
Beth. In my final year, I would love to set up a broader school council to get lots of different views of the school and how we can make it a better place, I would also love to get involved with renovating some of the school facilities as well.
Ben. As Head Beachburian I would like to start a new school council system that has a constant wheel that shows us what we have done, what we are doing and what we can do. I would also like to start a curriculum where different years go down to the Boardman and help with the youngest learners.
Q. What do you enjoy the most about being the Head Beachburian?
Beth. I love being head girl as it allows me to lead, support, and make a positive impact within our school community. I enjoy the opportunity to inspire others and promote being a good role model that the other pupils can aspire to be. The role enables me to advocate for my peers and nurture a sense of belonging and pride at Beachborough.
Ben. As Head Boy I love how involved I am all the time and how one of our duties is to talk to the younger years in lunch. This is very important to me as I love to chat and learn more about people.
Q. what advice would you give to anyone who is thinking about applying to become a Head Beachburian either at Beachborough Prep, or at another school?
Beth. Go for it! If you are considering applying for the role, my advice would be to just focus on your skills all round and be dedicated in the school community. You need to be willing to collaborate with others and demonstrate your commitment and communication skills.
Ben. My advice to anyone that is thinking of applying to for the role of Head Boy is that if you are thinking of going for it just back yourself and go for it. It does not matter if you don’t get it, you still tried, and you can give yourself some credit for going for it.
We are really looking forward to seeing both Beth and Ben take ownership of their roles for this academic year. As Head Girl and Boy, they have already made their presence known around the school and Beachborough community. Every Friday assembly for Forms III to VIII, Beth and Ben talk about positive current affairs, spread happy news and are already reorganising the school council!
Our very best wishes go to Beth and Ben for their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication to their roles this academic year, congratulations!
