Head’s Blog

The way to a more productive, more inspired, more joyful life is getting enough sleep.”  Arianna Huffington

At Beachborough, we are committed to providing the children with the best possible opportunities for success, both inside and outside the classroom. However, one often-overlooked cornerstone of a child’s development is sleep, a vital ingredient in their ability to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

During the prep school years, when children undergo rapid cognitive and physical growth, establishing healthy sleep routines is essential. Yet, in the hustle and bustle of daily life, it is all too easy to underestimate the significance of quality sleep.

Research shows that children in this age group need between 9 to 11 hours of sleep per night. During this time, their brains consolidate learning, strengthen memory, and enhance problem-solving skills. Sleep is also when physical growth and repair take place, facilitated by the release of growth hormones. Without sufficient rest, a child’s ability to focus, retain information, and regulate emotions can be severely impacted. Conversely, well-rested children approach their day with enthusiasm, resilience, and a readiness to learn.

In our boarding environment, we place great emphasis on the importance of sleep. We establish structured, calming bedtime routines that help children transition smoothly from a busy day to a restful night. These routines include no access to phones or devices, quiet time and a consistent “lights out” policy, all of which contribute to a positive sleep culture. Our boarding pupils not only develop an awareness of their own sleep needs but also learn to respect the importance of rest for those around them. After all, our role is to complement what is happening at home by ensuring that children have stimulating and engaging days that naturally prepare them for a restorative night’s sleep.

At Beachborough, we recognise the profound impact that sleep has on pupil outcomes and wellbeing. With this in mind, as part of our “Joining Hands Programme” we are delighted to welcome Kate Simlett, Deputy Head (Pastoral) at Tudor Hall on Thursday 6th February at 6.00pm, as she will be giving an insightful talk on The Importance of Sleep and how we can all become sleep champions.

In addition to Kate’s talk, on Thursday, we will also be welcoming the parents of Form VII and VIII to our Microsoft Showcase Parents Afternoon. This will be a fantastic opportunity to join your son or daughter in an interactive lesson, highlighting the innovative ways we integrate digital tools into our teaching and learning. If you would like to join us, please email secretary@beachborough.com

Wishing you a well-rested weekend,

Simone

Splashtastic 2025

On Saturday 25th January, 118 Beachburians and their families arrived to Towcester Leisure Centre for Splashtastic!

The annual event is held in aid of our main school charity, Mary’s Meals, and thanks to our attendees, we managed to raise a fabulous £250. This will feed 13 pupils, at our sponsored school in Malawi, for an entire year! A huge thank you to everyone who donated; we hope you had a wonderful time.

Lunar New Year Celebrations

On Wednesday 29th January, we celebrated Lunar New Year! In the Boardman, our Early Years children were commemorating this special day by creating their own lanterns, cutting out and decorating snakes, and learning traditional dances with colourful ribbons in hand!

In Form IV, Mr Jackson’s class learnt about the Lunar New Year, with Mrs Eynon.  The 29th of January marks the change from the Year of the Dragon to the Year of the Snake. It is celebrated with gifts, fireworks, and dragon and lion dances and culminates on the 15th day with a lantern festival. The children learnt about the traditions and celebrations that take place, they also decorated some snakes, to commemorate the year of the snake.

Our Kites boarders also embraced the festive spirit as they celebrated Lunar New Year in style! The boarding house looked spectacular, adorned with vibrant red decorations and beautiful new additions marking the Year of the Snake.

A huge thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Dowdeswell and Mrs. Allen for making the evening so special. They treated the boarders to an exciting dumpling-making session and shared fascinating insights into the traditions and significance of Lunar New Year celebrations.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our boarders to come together, learn, and enjoy delicious food in the warm and welcoming atmosphere of Kites. We are incredibly lucky to have such a fantastic boarding community of boarders, staff and parents!

U11 Netball v Swanbourne

With a girls’ football tournament taking place at the same time as our U11 netball fixture, the Cavaliers girls were all promoted to the B team where they played their Swanbourne counterparts.

The squad worked well together, showing some great tenacity to win the ball. They acted on advice offered to them each quarter and were keen to prove themselves as they rotated positions every 6 minutes.

Captain Sophie L had a fantastic opening quarter, scoring four goals in as many minutes. After scoring contributions from the rest of the team, the girls were delighted to secure a 9-4 victory. It was a pleasure to accompany this team and see how their skills are progressing on court.

Meet Mr Spirrett!

Our new Clarinet and Saxophone Teacher, Mr Spirrett, led a demonstration lesson for a group of FIV and they were able to get a feel for both instruments. Mr Spirrett is a fantastic musician and his experience as a performer and teacher will inspire the children.

There are places available for both clarinet and saxophone, so children are welcome to have a taster session if they would like to have a go!

Computing with FV

This term, Form V have been introduced to graphical drawing in Computing. They have explored how images are constructed from geometric shapes, experimenting with lines, colours, effects, and layering to create stunning digital artwork. Their creativity and technical skills have shone through in their designs – such an amazing menagerie with true Beachburian quirks! We all love a cat with a top hat and reindeer sporting a monocle! Well done, everyone.

Mrs Blithe and Mr Knowles

Maths with FIII

In Maths this week, our Form III children were measuring the perimeter of the front lawn and the current school playground. They were then tasked with designing their own playground and the children came up with some fabulous additions, such as treehouses, sandpits, and even a spa!

Well done, FIII; you are very imaginative.

Using Merge Cubes in Science

A Merge Cube lets you hold digital 3D objects in the palm of your hand, whether that be a hologram of an artifact, a fossil, or an animal!

In Science this week, our FV children were lucky enough to experience Merge Cubes and interacted with our solar system, which linked fantastically to their current topic of ‘Space’. They used the iPads to explore the different planets, and discovered interesting facts on each of them.

The U11 IAPS Netball Regional Championships at Uppingham School

Uppingham School U11 Netball IAPS SQUAD:  Tilly E, Megan Mc, Sophie C, Thea R, Isla R, Eva P, Isabella B and Georgie D-H

Coach: Mrs Gross   |   Umpire: Miss Little

Congratulations to the 8 players who represented Beachborough, on court, at Uppingham on Thursday. A fantastic tournament which allowed our players to show off their skills. During each match the girls were competitive, resilient, versatile, energetic, positive, supportive and eager to learn and improve.

The rules of Bee Netball require players to rotate their positions and therefore every player must be capable to play all positions: teamwork and effective positioning on court is essential. Well done, girls, some wonderful netball on show – great to watch and be part of your special day.

Our results – 2 strong wins and 2 close losses – put us through to the top tier of the competition – The Cup play offs.

Although, losing at the quarter final stage of the tournament, we were proud of our performance. Every player played their best netball and as a team, we felt proud of our achievements.

Thank you very much to Miss Little for umpiring during the tournament and to our supporters.

Our day was filled with netball, sunshine, smiles, hot chocolate and team building – bring on the rest of the season – we are ready and excited to get back on court!
