“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognise, accept, and celebrate those differences.”  Audre Lorde

Over the holidays, I finally picked up a book that Mrs Sanders recommended to me last year, and Audre Lorde’s words have resonated with me ever since.

The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida is a powerful and moving account of life through the eyes of a thirteen-year-old boy with severe autism. The book is not just a window into the mind of one individual, but a reminder of the importance of genuinely seeing and celebrating the differences in others.

In schools, where every child brings their own unique perspective and way of experiencing the world, this message could not be more relevant. Naoki’s voice challenges us to move beyond assumptions, and to embrace the value of every learner, not in spite of their differences, but because of them.

Written with the help of a letterboard and painstaking patience, Naoki’s words don’t just give an insight into autism, but also highlight aspects about all of us, how we listen, how we assume, and how we make space for different ways of experiencing the world.

Naoki writes with a voice that is heartbreakingly honest. He explains, in vivid detail, why he jumps, why he repeats things, why he finds comfort in patterns or struggles with questions but more than just explanations, his writing shows empathy, the kind that made me pause and reconsider the way neurodiversity is viewed in society.

As teachers, this book challenges us to think more deeply about the children in our care, not just in terms of academic progress, but as individuals with complex inner worlds. It reminds us that just because a child cannot express something in the way that we expect or are used to, it does not mean they are not feeling it deeply. There is so much more to see and understand, if we are willing to look beyond the surface.

Reading The Reason I Jump reminded me why inclusive education matters, not just as policy, but as a daily practice rooted in dignity and respect. For in a world that too often rushes past quiet voices, this book urges us to stop and listen because sometimes, the most powerful things are said without words. If you have time, this is a book that I would thoroughly recommend.

I had the pleasure of accompanying our enthusiastic young equestrians on Sunday at the Beachborough Eventers Challenge. With sunshine from start to finish, the day was thoroughly enjoyable and showcased impressive performances from the entire Beachborough team. It is heart‑warming to see this sport thriving. My sincere thanks go to Mrs Cowley for her superb organisation and to Mrs Garrett‑Sheane for her invaluable support.

After many years of guiding the equestrian team and masterminding the Beachborough Eventer, Mrs Cowley is stepping down and handing the reins to Mrs Garrett‑Sheane. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Cowley for the time, energy, passion, and enthusiasm she has devoted to Beachborough’s equestrian programme over the years.

It has been an absolute joy to welcome the children back this week, and we have begun the summer term with real energy and enthusiasm. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Easter Adventures for our Equestrian Team

Our equestrian team have been super busy over the holidays and made the most of their ponies in the beautiful weather!

We kicked off the holidays with Orla T’s 10th Birthday party, which she kindly shared with her equestrian team mates; throwing a pony party at home with games and food galore. A lovely gesture and showing how much fun they all have together – thank you Orla and family!

Sparsholt College Qualifier

On Sunday 30th March, Max J (Form VI) and Jack J (Form VIII) took part in qualifiers at Sparsholt College for the National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) Championships.

Max and his new pony ‘Charlie’ were placed 3rd in the 80cm class. Jack and his super-speedy pony ‘Lillie’ placed 2nd in the 80cms and 1st in the 90cms. These results now give Max the qualification in the 80cm finals and Jack, who is Beachborough’s Equestrian Captain, qualification in both the 80cm and 90cms finals.

Both boys are looking forward to representing their school at these prestigious finals in October at Addington Equestrian Centre, Buckingham.

Beachborough Eventers Challenge

On Sunday 20th April, Arabella H-S, Max J, Jack J, Sam H and Kitty G-S all arrived at Dallas Burston Polo Club, to compete at the annual Beachborough Eventers Challenge.

The sun shone for us as we welcomed riders from schools such as Stowe, Moor Park, Sponne and Spratton Hall! Classes consisted of a 60cm warm-up class, 70-75cm, 80-85cm, 90-95cm, and 1-1.05m. The aim was to jump a clear round within the optimum time, and those who qualified will compete at the NSEA Eventers Challenge Final at Hickstead in May 2025.

The brilliant LandS Eventing team and Alana Cowley had set up a fabulous course and rosettes and prizes galore for our competitors.

Our own team riders were out in force, and we happily took home Team 4th in both the 75cm and 80cm! There were also successful individual placings for Sam, who came 7th in the 75cm class on beautiful Betty, and brothers Jack and Max, taking 5th and 8th place in a strong 80cm class of 39 riders! Well done, boys!

It was another great event, and everyone rode brilliantly and went home safely.

Thank you to our generous sponsors: Tudor Hall, Bloxham, St. Edward’s, and Sederholm.

More Equestrian Success…

Next representing Beachborough was Harriet, with another super early start for the NSEA Grassroots at Bury Farm. Riding a new pony, Clocktower Tick Tock, they jumped a super clear in the 40cm and were placed 7th out of a strong line up of 23!

Our other keen team members were also busy riding at various hunt and pony club events:

Florrie had a great result at the Bicester Pony Club One Day Event, kindly hosted by Beachborough Ricketts/Juniper family, placing 3rd having completed  dressage, show jumping and x-country. Henry also took his sister’s new pony, Clocktower Tick Tock, for an outing and was awarded a brilliant score in the dressage; clear in the X-Country, but had an unlucky pole down in the show jumping.

Quite a number of the team were at the Grafton Hunter Trials held at Milton Keynes Event Centre – a fabulous facility. Even the first rainfall  of the Easter holidays couldn’t dampen spirits! Harriet rose to the challenge at her first Hunter Trials on her new pony, taking home 2nd place in the 40cm class, so again, hard work paying off.

Wilf was up bright and early along with his friends and rode a clear round in the 50cm, winning 2nd place and highest placed pony club member, taking home a fabulous trophy! Geordie rode a great round on Cluedo, their maiden voyage, also at this type of event and placed 7th – a great result. Kitty also took part in this event – again, her first Hunter Trials, and teamed up with Katie placing 3rd in the 80cm pairs and managed to take 1st place in the 80cm individual class on Oscar.

Max & Arabella also had their first Hunter Trials on the same day, over at the brilliant Swalcliffe Park.  Both rode confidently around a meaty and challenging course,  a brilliant experience and one that certainly helped in the run up to the Beachborough Eventers Challenge!

Harriet had a great day with her new pony, Clocktower Tick Tock, at the Heythrop Eventer Challenge in the 50cm class. The first time for Harriet jumping at this height. This event is on grass, so plenty of room for ponies to behave like ponies do, but Harriet’s perseverance and training paid off and they had a nice clear in the show jumping and clear in the X-country and were placed 4th.

We are very proud of our team in their individual events and their hard work in our training sessions has most certainly paid off!

Mr Blee’s Half Marathon for Mary’s Meals – £100 to go!

This weekend, on Sunday 27th April, Mr Blee will be running the Shakespeare Half Marathon, all in aid of raising money for Mary’s Meals!

Mr Blee has raised an incredible £900 so far, which means that he is just £100 away from reaching his target. We would be delighted if his target of £1,000 could be achieved, as this will enable us to feed 52 children for an entire year, at our sponsored school in Malawi.

We have created a JustGiving page, if you wish to kindly donate: JUSTGIVING PAGE

Thank you so much for your generosity, and good luck, Mr Blee!

ABRSM Music Exam Results

A huge congratulations to all of those who took part in the ABRSM exams before Easter. The children have worked incredibly hard, and we’re thrilled to share their fabulous results.

Well done, everyone!

Back to School!

Wednesday 23rd April marked the start of the summer term for Beachborough Prep.

We were delighted to catch up with our Beachborough community, and hear all about the wonderful adventures that took place over the Easter holidays. We also extended a warm welcome to a handful of new families, and we’re so pleased that they have joined us for the exciting term ahead.

The summer term is a busy, fun-filled time for our Beachburians, with lots to look forward to, and we’re all ready and raring to go!

Arthur K’s Tumbling Success…

Over the Easter holidays, Arthur competed in the British Gymnastics Trampoline, Tumbling, and DMT National Qualification Event 2025, also known as “Spring 1”.

It’s the 1st major competition of the year and is the qualifier to get into the British Championships in the Autumn.

Arthur had his 2 runs and managed to secure 2nd place and record his first Silver Medal in a major British Gymnastics competition.

His 2nd run was certainly testing for him, as the judges held him back on the track before he started his run as they were analysing the previous athletes run. Despite being held in the hottest for 5 minutes before being able to start his run, he composed himself well and landed his Double Pike.

Arthur and his family are looking forward to the rest of the competition season and the British Championships!

Congratulations, Arthur – the Beachborough community are so proud.
