Head’s BlogHead Teacher

“The time is always right to do the right thing.” Dr Martin Luther King

It has been great to welcome the children back into school this week, and to get the new academic year underway.  As well as the buzz and excitement of catching up with friends, there has been a calm and purposeful atmosphere in classrooms, as new topics and projects get underway.

We also held the first of our Information Evenings on Thursday, which was a good opportunity to encourage you to remain in close communication with the school, and to let us know as soon as possible if you feel that something is not going well, or to pass on news from home that we can celebrate. The start of a new year can be busy, and we really don’t want to miss anything important, so please do talk to us if there is anything that we need to know.

We talk a great deal about respect for one another at Beachborough, as it such an important quality for a successful community. In assembly this morning, I reminded the children of this important moral value by discussing the impact that peer pressure can have on our community.

All of us want to get approval for what we do.  Even teachers like to know whether they have delivered a good lesson – have they got their point across, have the children listened to them!  In a new environment, a new academic year, the pressure for peer approval can be even greater.

As I mentioned to the children, it is unlikely that someone will signpost what the group expectations are, but there will certainly be a pressure to conform, to fit in, and not to upset the crowd. All of us want to fit in with others, and the concern is that you will sacrifice your own values in order to fit in. However, the great thing about a new term, a new school year, or a new school, is that this is an opportunity to do things differently. To consider what is right and do it.  Not to listen to those people who might say that it is okay to be rude to others or that it is not clever to work too hard. Instead, it is a time when you can focus on what you know is right. Make new friends, show kindness, work as hard as you can, because ultimately, you will benefit from that. Take part, join in, because you will be the one who enjoys the challenge, and finds their passion. If some people don’t want to talk to you, go out of your way to find people who you want to talk to.

So, if you want to do what is right, be prepared to challenge yourself and do something difficult.  It is very easy to follow the crowd, it is very easy to stand by and see things happen, it takes remarkable courage to go against the flow, to stand up for what is right, and to make the difference that can make things better, but that is what our community is all about, for ‘the time is always right to do the right thing.’

A huge thank you and well done to Form VIII who attended Prefect Training on Tuesday, they were an absolute delight to work with showing commitment and an excitement for their roles. We are very much looking forward to working with them over the coming months.

Wishing you all a very enjoyable weekend,

Simone

Saffiya and Riyaan visit Sri Lanka!

Riyaan (PP1), Saffiya (Kindergarten), and their parents went to Sri Lanka in the summer holidays. Whilst there, they visited a school in a very low-income area to find to out how they could help them.

They found out that all of the children (106 of them!) didn’t have basic equipment for their schooling. As such, they went to a local shop and purchased enough notebooks, pens, pencils and chocolates for all 106 children, and then Saffiya and Riyaan went to hand it all out.

The Sri Lankan children were so happy, and Riyaan and Saffiya were equally as pleased that they’d been able to do something to help the children.

They’ve since pledged as a family to help the school financially going forward, as well as helping them devise a proper English curriculum (due to Mum being an English Teacher).

They’re currently awaiting a letter from the Principal, which will detail the areas in which they need help.

A huge well done to Saffiya, Riyaan and family for spending the summer in such fabulous way!

Should any parents wish to be involved and help as a collective, please email l.boutle@beachborough.com for the relevant contact details.

Evelyn B’s Karate Success

Evelyn (FV) has recently been selected to join her local competitive Karate squad, Sports Karate Academy https://www.sportkarateacademy.com/. This is something she’s been working towards during the past year and is a huge honour to have been chosen. The SKA compete at a high level, Nationally and Internationally, and currently have the highest number of members on the English National Squad.

Her first competition is at the UK International Karate Open on Sunday 15th of September, and the Beachborough community are wishing her the best of luck!

Clemmie and Fran Fundraise for Mary’s Meals!

Clemmie N and Fran T (both Form V) made and sold cakes to neighbours on behalf of Mary’s Meals this week, raising around £20.

The money that they have raised will pay for one child, at our sponsored school – Nthola Primary in Malawi – to be fed a daily vitamin enriched mug of porridge for a whole year!

Well done Clemmie and Fran, your fundraising efforts make a huge difference.

Summer Holiday Sports Camps

In the penultimate week of the summer holidays, the Sports Department organised a pre-season programme of rugby and hockey for our Forms III to VIII boys and girls, to prepare our pupils for the term ahead. We had over 60 pupils involved in both activities; a wonderful take up from the school community.

The rugby camp was led by 5 coaches from Northampton Saints, building on the partnership that the school has with the club. We were fortunate to have a visit from current Saints players, Henry Pollock (ex Beachburian and U20 World Cup winner) and George Makepeace-Cubitt, on the Wednesday 28th August. They assisted with the coaching and answered a number of probing questions about being a professional from our pupils! For Henry, it was his first time back at Beachborough since leaving at the end of Form VIII in July 2018!

The 3 days of hockey coaching was led by Mrs Howkins for our Forms III and IV girls (Tuesday), Forms VII and VIII girls (Wednesday, which took place at Bloxham School in conjunction with their pre-season programme, and included two warm up wins for our girls’ teams against Bloxham) and Forms V and VI girls (Thursday). Assisted by other members of the Games Department, the girls were all put through their paces ahead of this season’s busy programme of hockey matches.

Mr Usher

Introducing Bertie!

Introducing our newest Beachburian, Bertie! He is a twelve-week-old Norfolk Terrier puppy, who belongs to Mrs Mitchell and her family.  Mrs Mitchell hopes that when he is older, Bertie will be able to be trained as either a Therapy or Reading Dog.

You may see Bertie around the school site, and we are certain that he will be warmly welcomed!

Meet our new Wellbeing Ambassadors

Introducing our new Wellbeing Ambassadors for the 2024/25 academic year – Lyla and Edgar!

Lyla and Edgar will be working alongside Mrs Crook, our Nurture and Wellbeing Practitioner, and of course Arnie, our Wellbeing Dog. Our ambassadors will receive comprehensive training, which will equip them with the necessary skills and mindset to foster the wellbeing of the students. Their role involves providing a listening ear and support to students, who may have worries or concerns. They will actively promote a positive mental health culture within our school community, coordinate special events, and celebrate days dedicated to mental health awareness.

Well done to Lyla and Edgar, for embracing such an important role!
