“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today” – Malcolm X

Malcolm X’s words remind us that education is the foundation upon which future success is built. Today, in our ever-evolving world, children need more than traditional learning; they need opportunities to communicate, reflect, adapt, and collaborate in meaningful ways so they are equipped to face a dynamic future. With this in mind, I am pleased to introduce a new initiative to Beachborough, which will begin in September 2025: the CREATE Programme.  This is designed to prepare Beachburians with the essential skills needed to succeed in their future lives, CREATE is a progressive skills programme that aligns closely with Microsoft’s 21st Century Learners framework and the current Beachborough Intellectual Learning Characteristics.

The future in which our children will live, and work is changing at an unprecedented pace. Traditional knowledge-based learning, while still valuable, is no longer enough on its own. Employers, universities, and global institutions increasingly seek individuals who can think critically, adapt swiftly, collaborate effectively, and innovate confidently. To prepare Beachburians for these challenges, we are embedding a structured approach that nurtures these very skills throughout their learning journey.

This new programme has been devised to be embedded within teaching and learning, ensuring that children explicitly experience and understand these essential skills. Rather than being a standalone initiative, CREATE represents a vision that blends the Microsoft Showcase Skills with the current Beachborough Intellectual Learning Characteristics embedding these competencies seamlessly into everyday learning.

The CREATE Programme is built around six important areas:

  • Communication (C) – The ability to communicate clearly and effectively is essential for success in any field. Whether speaking, writing, or using digital platforms, strong communication skills enable children to express their ideas confidently, collaborate well with others, and build meaningful relationships in both personal and educational settings.
  • Reflection (R) – Learning to reflect allows children to assess their own progress, understand their strengths, and identify areas for improvement. By developing a habit of self-evaluation, they build resilience and take ownership of their learning.
  • Empathy (E) – Understanding and respecting different perspectives is a key skill in today’s interconnected world. Empathy helps children build strong relationships, work effectively in diverse teams, and develop emotional intelligence, qualities that are highly valued and contribute to positive social interactions.
  • Adaptability (A) – Society is constantly evolving, requiring individuals who can embrace change and remain open to new ideas. By developing adaptability, children learn to approach challenges with confidence, think creatively in uncertain situations, and stay resilient in the face of setbacks.
  • Tenacity (T) – Determination and perseverance are vital in overcoming obstacles and achieving goals. Encouraging children to be tenacious helps them develop problem-solving skills, creativity, and a strong work ethic, qualities which enable them to thrive in demanding and competitive environments.
  • Engagement (E) – Actively participating and working well with others are crucial for success in both education and beyond. By fostering engagement, children develop teamwork and leadership skills, learn how to collaborate effectively, and contribute positively to their communities.

CREATE will be introduced across the whole school in a way that is appropriate to each age and stage of development. In the Manor House, the current Credit system will be adjusted to better reflect achievements in these key skill areas. This approach ensures that all children, regardless of age, have the opportunity to develop, practise, and be recognised for their progress in these essential competencies.

We are incredibly excited about the impact this programme will have on the children, and we look forward to supporting them on this journey.

Thank you for your continued support.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Simone

Saving Neverland by Abi Elphinstone

Abi Elphinstone has done it again. ‘Saving Neverland’ is a simply glorious adventure for both young and old. For those unfortunate enough to have ‘grown-up’, a re-encounter with the marvellously irrepressible Peter Pan and a return to Neverland’s shores (remember Marooner’s Rock and Mermaid lagoon?) ‘Saving Neverland’ cannot fail to re-awaken the magic of childhood. And, for those meeting Peter and exploring Neverland for the very first time, Elphinstone has beautifully and seamlessly woven a thrilling fantasy adventure, where courage, hope and magic abound, into the wonderful world first imagined by JM Barrie.

An Unprecedented Step in Sport at Beachborough

At Beachborough Prep, our children begin to play in competitive fixtures from Form III onwards; however, our Sports Department have taken a fantastic leap forwards by starting to recognise talented sportspeople from as early as Pre-Prep 2, which is a remarkable development.

This week, we celebrated the outstanding participation of PP2’s Liam S, Max W, and Zac B in their first Form III football match. These three boys have been identified as Higher-Level Learners in PE, showcasing exceptional skills across various sports. To further their growth and support their development, they have been engaging in regular Games lessons with FIII, culminating in an impressive debut against Akeley Wood on Tuesday, where Max scored a goal!

This initiative is a significant advancement, empowering our talented athletes to enhance their skills, compete with older peers, and gain invaluable experience in competitive sports. Congratulations are in order for Liam, Max, and Zac for their recent achievements!

A terrific week of sport at Beachborough with 3x Pre-Prep 2 pupils making their debuts for the school on Tuesday, success for the U10 girls at the St Hugh’s netball tournament on Wednesday, and our U11 boys qualifying for the IAPS National Hockey Finals after finishing 3rd at their Regional qualifier in Abingdon on Thursday.

Sublime Science with Pre-Prep 1

What an exciting start to the week for PP1. We had a visit from the scientist Astro Alisha. She came all the way from Sublime Science to build upon our curiosity of cause and effect.

Our morning started with an airzooker! This led to much excitement about air displacement, alongside the visual delight of smoke circles to watch air dissipation in action. Our smiles were in full force as we experienced air pressure upon our faces through being airzookered!

This was followed by an experiment to understand density of liquids. We learnt firsthand how water and oil repel other through making Lava lamps. We discussed scientific terms such as density, repel and polarity! We were in awe of watching the bubbles move through the water then oil, because they were lighter than both the liquids.

Our predictive skills were tested through experiments with a variety of different sized balls and a leaf blower. We are happy to report that most of our predictions were correct, but still led to a delightful level of shock when the balls were shot into the rafters at speed!

We spent the day exploring new concepts, consolidating known knowledge, and building a love of scientific curiosity. Our minds were as busy as our hands creating, thinking and applying.

In the afternoon, they were spellbound as a simple powder transformed into fake snow, with many eager to create their own snow storms on the terrace. Furthermore, the children made predictions about the height their water rockets would reach. The day culminated in the delightful experience of producing their own slime.

U11B Netball v St. Hugh’s

The U11B team enjoyed a tremendous 23-2 victory in their home fixture against St. Hugh’s. This is the first time that these five girls have played together, and they were very impressive. They dominated the match from the first whistle, and every one of them scored during the game. It was too difficult to choose one individual stand-out performance, so the whole team were awarded ‘Players of the Match’.

Mr Blithe’s Co-curricular Club Updates!

The Boardman children can enjoy a kaleidoscope of co-curricular clubs. Sports include tag rugby, diamond cricket, cross country, football and basketball. The emphasis in each club is for fun, engagement and for the children to gain an understanding of how teamwork through play contributes to achieving their goals – sometimes literally!

Northampton Saints Rugby Sevens Tournament

On a beautiful, brisk February day, our senior rugby boys took part in the annual Northampton Saints Sevens competition, hosted at Stowe School. Sevens rugby is a much faster-paced and more tactical format of the game compared to the traditional 15-a-side, requiring a unique approach and years of practice to master.

Our boys rose to the challenge, playing with incredible determination and heart in every game. The competition was fierce, with some tightly contested matches that didn’t always go our way. The day ended with a 1-win, 3-loss record, but the results could easily have been different—what if that pass had landed, the ankle tap had been avoided, or the tackle had closed the gap?

Despite the tough competition, the boys gained invaluable experience on the field. Days like this push us to grow, both as a team and as individual players. Well done to all involved – you represented the school with pride and passion!

Friday Night Boarding: Harry Potter!

It was a magical evening at Beachborough on Friday 31st January, as our boarders enjoyed a Harry Potter night!

Donning their best wizard and witches outfits, the children witnessed some spellbinding magic from professional magician and comedian, Carl Charlesworth. The room was filled with laughter, disbelief, and admiration for Carl and his tricks, and his performance was nothing short of impressive.

Aside from trying their hand at some magic, the children also took part in an array of Harry Potter themed activities, such as wordsearches, quizzes to determine which House they’re in, and wearing the famous ‘Sorting Hat’.

Huge thanks go to our Houseparents, Mr and Mrs Blithe, for arranging such a wonderful evening for our boarders, and to Carl for bringing a touch of real magic to Beachborough.

U10 Netball Tournament at St Hugh’s

On Wednesday afternoon, the U10 A, B, and C netball teams experienced a highly successful tournament, with each team earning medals—a remarkable achievement that reflects the dedication and effort the girls have invested in their training sessions so far and on the day. We are immensely proud of all the players!

The A team participated in a triangular tournament against St Hugh’s and Beaudesert. In their first match against Beaudesert, the girls demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, securing a decisive victory with a score of 11- 2. The subsequent match against a rested St Hugh’s was intensely competitive, with both teams scoring goals in quick succession. At the final whistle, the thrilling match concluded in a 7-7 draw. Happily, the result was determined by goal difference, allowing our girls to claim the gold medals!

The B and C teams also showcased impressive performances. The B team concluded the tournament with two victories and one loss, earning them their silver medals. Meanwhile, the C team delivered a fantastic performance by winning all three of their matches, proudly securing themselves gold medals.

Each coach recognised the outstanding efforts of all the girls, so have awarded ‘Players of the Match’ to their respective teams. It was a day of excellent netball, and we look forward to seeing their continued progression!

U11 Hockey Regionals at Abingdon School

On Thursday 6th February, the U11 Boys hockey team took part in the IAPS regional hockey tournament at Abingdon School. After a slight delay due to frost, the first match was against Bablake School. We started well and at half time we were 2-0 up thanks to goals from Jamie S and Nick H. Tournament games are always short matches and the key is to score first and put the opposition under pressure. In the second half, Bablake attacked hard leaving themselves exposed at the back. Jamie S scored a third goal but in the last minute Balblake scored from a well worked short corner. The final score was a very pleasing 3-1 victory. It was an excellent start.

The second game was against local rivals Winchester House School. Having been beaten 1-0 the day before, the boys were keen to make amends. They started the game really well, dominating in all areas of the pitch and quickly took a 1-0 lead thanks to another find goal from Jamie S. In the second half, the boys continued to play excellent hockey. Another excellent goal from Nick H from a short corner ensured we comprehensive 2-0 win.

The third group game was against MCS Oxford and we knew a victory would ensure we topped the group and go through to the cup. It was a scrappy game and MCS Oxford put us under pressure and didn’t let us settle. An opportunistic reverse strike from Jamie S gave us a 1-0 lead against the run of play. MCS kept piling on the pressure and equalised just after half time. The boys kept calm and just when we thought the match was going to be a draw, Jonah L pounced on a loose ball to score the decisive goal. A nail biting 2-1 victory and a sport in the cup quarter finals was just reward for the hard work and determination shown by the team.

The final group game was against Kimbolton. The less said about it the better, as we lost 0-1 in a scrappy game. Although disappointed, the boys had played exceptionally well and topped the group.

Being winner of the group meant that our quarter final was against the runners up of another group. This, in theory, gave us a slightly easier game against Leicester Grammar. From the start, it was clear that we were the better team. We dominated the whole match but just couldn’t score. 0-0 at half time. Chance after chance went begging but then Jamie S stepped up and slotted home the match winning goal. A tense 1-0 victory and a place in the cup semi-final.

This is where things started to get very tense. With only 3 teams going through to the nationals, a win in the semi-finals would guarantee us a spot. The opposition were KES Birmingham who had topped their group earlier in the day. The boys were focused and up for the challenge. This was a super example of Prep School hockey with two very good teams cancelling each other out. It was all about who could score first. 0-0 at half time and the pressure was mounting with both sides having chances. Mid-way through the second half, the deadlock was broken thanks to Jamie S. With 30 seconds left on the clock, KES intercepted a pass and after a goal line scramble managed to score an equaliser. The final score ended 1-1 and a five-minute period of ‘golden goal’ loomed. The teams were still locked at 1-1 after golden goal so it went to penalty strokes. 3 players from each team take a stroke and if it is level then it goes to sudden death. It is worth noting at this point that our goalie, Fergus B, was truly outstanding. Both teams exchanged goals and misses. On the eighteenth stroke, the scores we still level. The pressure was incredible. Our three stroke takers of Jamie S, Nick H and Jonah L showed composure and perseverance in abundance and must be congratulated for stepping forward to have a go. Sadly, we were defeated on the nineteenth penalty stoke which put us into the 3rd-4th playoff. The boys were understandingly devastated, but we needed to put that disappointment behind us and give one more huge effort to try and secure that final nationals spot.

The 3rd – 4th play off game was against Ratcliffe College, who had also lost on penalty stokes. Both teams were mentally and physically exhausted and this showed in the match. At the end of normal time and golden goal, the score was 0-0 so another set of penalty strokes were going to decide who came third. This time, Fergus T replaced Jamie S and another incredibly tense round of stokes commenced. After the first two rounds, both teams were level. Ratcliffe missed their eighth stroke and Jonah L stepped up. If he scored, we would win the match, come third in the tournament, and secure a place in the National Finals. Very calmly Jonah L slotted the ball in the bottom left-hand corner and the game ended with Beachborough coming out on top and securing third place. The boys, supporters, and staff were ecstatic and it was just reward for the outstanding efforts the whole team had put in throughout the day.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that the boys only had two hockey sessions and one match before the event. Every other team had been playing hockey for the whole term. I cannot praise the boys enough and am I delighted that they have achieved something that has only ever happen once before in the last twelve years.

Thank you so much to all the parents that came and supported and to Mr Usher for umpiring and keeping me calm throughout the day. We look forward to a trip to the Nationals on Monday 10th March at Framlingham College.

Microsoft Showcase Afternoon: Parents Back in the Classroom!

On Thursday, we were delighted to welcome Form VII and VIII parents into the classroom for our Microsoft Showcase Afternoon. This special event gave parents the opportunity to join their children in Maths and English lessons, experiencing first-hand how we integrate technology into learning.

From interactive OneNote collaboration to engaging feedback tools, our digital approach enhances both teaching and learning. Parents saw how their children use these tools to problem-solve,  and develop key skills in dynamic and innovative ways.

Feedback from parents was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on how technology enhances engagement and deepens understanding.

Events like these are invaluable in helping us refine and develop our digital strategy, ensuring that technology continues to support and enrich learning at Beachborough. A huge thank you to the parents who joined us, we hope you enjoyed being pupils for the afternoon.

U13 IAPS Netball Regional Championships at Uppingham School

On Friday 31st January, our U13 Girls had their IAPS Netball Tournament at Uppingham School. Mrs Little very kindly volunteered to drive the minibus and was a great support for the girls. There were two pools in the tournament but unfortunately, we were in the tough one! The standard of netball was incredible and our girls put up a tough fight. We lost our first three games until finally, we won a game which then put us on a winning streak. We ended up in the ‘Bowl’ play offs and won our games comfortably – winning the Bowl overall!

Well done to the squad for being so adaptable, playing in different positions and working so well together as a team. Grace T was our player of the tournament. She played in a variety of positions and made a real difference to the team in every position she played. Well done, U13 girls.
